Slow Cooker French Dipped Sandwiches

If you happen to be in Los Angeles you must make a stop into Phillipe the Original in Chinatown for the best French dipped sandwiches. While all their versions are pretty yummy (lamb, roast pork, turkey or ham) it’s their classic roast beef French dip that is iconic LA food and I had to recreate the sandwich at home for when the craving just needs to be satisfied. This is the restaurant’s classic recipe adapted for the slow cooker. Much cheaper than a plane ticket!

Turnip Gratin

There are so many great fall root vegetables that get such little notice; one of them being the humble turnip. I think we are intimidated by what to do with these spicy, creamy white and purple-tinged jewels. I love to cube them up into stews and soups or roast them with carrots and sweet potatoes but it was not until I made this turnip gratin (that I adapted from an internet recipe) that I understood its simple elegance.

This rich gratin was a big hit at my book club. It’s a sophisticated alternative to a potato gratin or scalloped potatoes and the perfect surprise side dish this fall and winter, especially during the holidays.

Fresh Cranberry Sauce

This is my version of cranberry sauce that I always bring to my mother’s house every Thanksgiving (and now that the torch has been passed to me it’ll be gracing my dining table from now on). While the basic Ocean Spray recipe will do I like to add my own touch and this is what I came up with. There is usually not much leftover so sometimes I make a second batch for Black Friday turkey and cranberry

Pear and Golden Raisin Ginger Chutney

I adapted this warm, savory-sweet chutney from a Southern Living recipe as part of the 4th course of The Mystic Meals Under the Moon October Full Hunter Moon Dinner. I paired it with a creamy brie, although a mild nutty cheddar works well too. Consider using this chutney during the holidays as a condiment to a roast pork or turkey. It’s a keeper!

Chocolate Chip Zucchini Bread

Something about the start of fall (even if it is 90 degrees) has me trying all kinds of quick breads. As you know I am not much of a baker and quick breads are very forgiving and easy. While banana bread is my good ‘ole standby (as I always have ripe bananas lying around), I wanted to try my hand at a gluten-free version of a popular end-of-summer, early fall favorite- zucchini bread (when we are all trying to use up the abundance of zucchini in our gardens). Two thumbs up from family and friends and they did not even miss the wheat flour or refined sugar.
