Slow Cooker Sloppy Joes

Slow Cooker Sloppy Joes

Slow Cooker Sloppy Joes
This is very kid-pleasing and easy to throw together. I like to serve it with a green salad or crudités. It’s a bit sweeter than a typical Sloppy Joe recipe, but a nice change from feeling like you are eating spaghetti on a bun.

    Ingredients
    • 2teaspoon olive oil
    • 1 onion, chopped
    • 3 garlic cloves, chopped
    • 1 1/2pound lean ground beef
    • sea salt and ground black pepper, to taste
    • 1cup catsup (preferably without high fructose corn syrup)
    • 2 celery stalks, chopped
    • 1/3cup water
    • 2tablespoon agave syrup or brown sugar
    • 3tablespoon Dijon mustard
    • 4tablespoon apple cider vinegar
    • 1teaspoon chili powder
    • 8 whole wheat, wheat or gluten free hamburger rolls
    Instructions
    1. Heat olive oil in a large non-stick skillet. Add onion and garlic and sauté for 1-2 minutes until onions are translucent. Add ground beef and continue to cook until meat is browned. Season mixture with salt and pepper to taste. Drain fat and set aside.
    2. Combine the catsup and the next 6 ingredients (through chili powder) in a large crock pot. Stir in beef mixture.
    3. Cover and cook on low-heat for 8 hours or on high heat for 3-4 hours. Spoon into whole wheat hamburger rolls.
    Recipe Notes

Change out the ground beef to ground turkey if you are watching your red meat intake.

My youngest finds 1 teaspoon of chili powder plenty spicy but if your family prefers less heat reduce to ½ teaspoon or for more heat add an additional ½ to 1 teaspoon.
